Amanda Yopp

In my work I am exploring the juxtaposition of the outside and inside of the feminine position. My female characters are not only the narrators, but they also seem to sense they are being observed like someone writing in a diary for a perceived audience. The figure, typically in an abstract setting, is captured in a private moment and the viewer becomes to some extent, a voyeur. The outsider looking in. To accentuate the distance between internal and external I am combing the intimacy of painting and drawing with the more removed process of printmaking. The quick lines and rapid brushwork produce a feeling of urgency while the graphic nature of the woodblock feels weighty and severe. However the challenge is bringing the different mediums together in a way in which they enhance each other. Many of my works contain text because words hold as much beauty and power for me as a sensitive line or a striking brushstroke. The text, which might be scratched in, delicately drawn, embossed, or hand stamped becomes another layer in each piece. The tactile surfaces of my art works are seductive, bringing the viewer closer and intimately involved.
